The JV wrestling team lost their meet against the Merrillville Pirates Wednesday, Jan. 9. This was the boys’ first loss, the final score being 27-48.

“The season is going pretty good. Everyone is working hard and getting better. We’ve had some tough losses, but overall I think we’re doing a great job,” Dejan Tomic (10) said.

Throughout the meet, the coaches assisted the boys in preparing them for their match. During the match, the coaches guided the boys in what to do and encouraged them.

“My favorite thing about wrestling is the coaches, because they help you with anything you need help with,” Noah Deyarmin (9) said.

Many of the wrestlers have been wrestling since their early childhood and decided to continue the sport in high school. Other boys started the sport after finishing a season or quitting a different sport.

“I started wrestling to challenge myself to keep my grades up, to meet new friends and to have fun,” Deyarmin said.

Although the team has only lost one match, the team has also come across challenges this season. The boys realized they need improvement in some aspects of their sport.

“Our challenge this season is that we don’t push ourselves [too hard],” Joseph Tham (10) said.

Recognizing the challenges facing the team, the boys realized they can improve and prosper. The boys hope to gain many accomplishments as the season continues.

“I think we can accomplish anything if we put our hearts into it and give it all we got from the bottom to the top,” Deyarmin said.
