Best Buddies move to the music

Every year Best Buddies hosts the club’s own prom as its last event, and this year it was held on May 9 in the cafeteria from 5-8 p.m.

“The benefit of the Best Buddies Prom is to provide the special needs kids and the general [education] kids with a final party to celebrate another successful school year. Our prom serves as an end-of-the-year party for all the students. By attending the prom, the students get to hang out with the friends they have made one more time before summer,” Mrs. Kathryn Clark, Adviser of Best Buddies, said.

Once everyone arrived, they made their way to the dance floor to start off the fun night.  Some popular songs that  got the kids dancing were “Wrecking Ball” by Miley Cyrus,  “Party in the U.S.A.” by Miley Cyrus and “The Macarena” by Los del Rio.

“From my perspective, the best part of Prom is watching the special needs kids and the general [education] kids interacting with each other.  The special [education] students are so sweet and hilarious, and it’s heartwarming to watch how the general [education] kids work with them.  Also, the dance-offs are always a blast,” Mrs. Clark said.

After eating dinner, more dancing happened and the kids were able to show off their moves. Between dance-offs and break dancing, the dance had an abundance of energy flowing and the kids came out smiling and laughing.

“I’m going to miss the kids the most. I’ve learned a lot from every one of them.  It’s a shame that I won’t be able to continue Best Buddies during college, but I hope to come back for a few events,” Noah Sarkey (12), vice president, said.

Although the Best Buddies Prom was the closing event of the year, Best Buddies will start again next year in September.
