With current seniors preparing to make the transition to college, the Lake Central Guidance Department has been looking to social media in order to showcase students and what schools they were admitted into by using the “#LCHSToCollege” hashtag.
“With the seniors, we are having them write down what school they are going to [on a chalkboard]. Even if they are going into the military or got into an apprenticeship, we are excited for their plans for the future. We take their picture and post it on Twitter and Instagram. We have also put up a bulletin board where we are putting up pictures [of the students] as well, ” Mrs. Melissa Rettig, Head of Guidance, said.
The intent of the #LCHSToCollege project is to show off the students of Lake Central and to allow others to be proud of their peers.
“I really think that we need to celebrate our [students]. Our [students] are doing some amazing things and are going some amazing places,” Rettig said.
What started off as just something guidance aides were doing for fun has turned into a school-wide event where any senior is allowed to participate by visiting the guidance office.
“This started with all of our aides and we were hoping by word of mouth this would get around and it definitely has,” Rettig said.
The hashtag has allowed the guidance Twitter and Instagram accounts to grow immensely.
“Our Twitter and Instagram follower numbers have really gone up because people enjoy seeing their friends. There has been a very positive response,” Rettig said.
Students can follow the Lake Central Guidance Department on Twitter and Instagram by using the handle @LCHS_Guidance.
