Tory Morris (12) stands with her cadet teaching class. The cadet teaching program started during the 2016-2017 school year.

Q: Why did you initially choose the cadet teaching program?

A: I initially chose cadet teaching because my counselor introduced it to me. It seemed like a great opportunity to see if teaching was the right career for me.

Q: Who is your teacher and how have they helped you?

A: My cadet teacher is Cheryl Bussey, and she has helped me immensely. She has taught me classroom management, how to interact with all the different students in the class, and she always is willing and eager to give her advice about any questions I may have regarding teaching.

Q: Has this experience made you realize anything?

A: This experience has made me realize that teaching is what I want to do as my career. I love walking into the classroom every single day and seeing all the faces of the kids happy to see me. Before this program, I was not certain on what I wanted to major in once I got into college.

Q: Where are you going to college and what is your major?

A: I am going to IUPUI with a major in elementary education.

Q: Why did you choose IUPUI?

A: I chose IUPUI, because it offered a great teaching program. I have gone on several visits there and the campus is beautiful. There are a lot of opportunities as well for me once I start my student teaching.

Q: Do you think the cadet teaching program is preparing you to be a teacher?

A: I definitely feel like this program is preparing me to be a teacher. I teach my own lessons, help out when we have a substitute teacher, and I catch students up with work they may have been absent from the day before.

Q: What is your favorite thing about cadet teaching?

A: My favorite thing about teaching is the fact that I get to leave an impression on the students. They are still learning how to just be in school, so making school fun is one of my goals. I hope to leave an impression of school that is fun and exciting, so they will always enjoy coming to school.

Q: Do you have any advice for others considering the program?

A: My advice to others who may join this program is to love what you are doing. The students can pick up if you do not want to be there. It is fun, however, you are still learning how to be a teacher and with that comes determination and work.

Q: Would you recommend the program to others? Why?

A: I would recommend this program to others because many people do not get this type of opportunity. If you are thinking of teacher this is a great experience to see what entails in being a teacher before student teaching in college.
