Sound filled the auditorium on Nov. 15th as students performed pieces that they have been preparing for the jazz band’s fall concert.
“I prepared for the concert by practicing the pieces, working on technique and running pieces with other members of the jazz band,” Nathaniel Sorrentino (10) said.
Students participate in jazz band to release emotions through their music and perform pieces with their friends. While some want to pursue a jazz career in the future, others took the class to obtain theri fine art credit.
“I like jazz band because of the freedom of playing you get and it’s pretty much a judgement-free environment from the other players. Everyone just has fun the whole time and doesn’t worry about skill or anything,” Carter Fox (11) said.
Students continuously practice in order to get better every day and so that each concert can be better than the one previous.
“My goals for the rest of the year are to improve on my instrument and to hopefully pick up another [instrument] so I have more capabilities in my musical playing,” Stephanie Haynes (10) said.
The jazz bands have students from all grades. There are certain experiences that seniors will miss when they graduate.
“The most memorable thing from jazz band was playing ‘Moanin’ this year because that song is the staple of music for the bari saxophone,” Nathan Bryner (12) said.
