On Wednesday, Dec. 5, the varsity wrestling team defeated the Valparaiso Vikings at home with a final score of 59-12. Their next meet will be held at Crown Point on Dec 8.
“My favorite part is just being with the team. They are a bunch of goofballs. I love them. I lost one match which was unexpected, but I have to keep going forward. My goal is to be in the finals for every tournament and hopefully a state title,” Daniel Park (12) said.
The varsity wrestlers have persevered through personal injury to complete this season. With a majority of wrestlers being seniors, the team has had a successful season.
“I am 5-1 right now. I think I am doing pretty well thus far. I am wrestling with a broken foot right now so just working through the pain right now is the biggest challenge. My favorite part has been winning,” Mason Skrezyna (12) said.
Along with personal challenges, most members of the team can agree the group’s biggest challenge of the season will be defeating Crown Point at Sectionals. They will continue to train hard to complete this challenge.
“We are working a lot harder than I noticed last year: in the weight room and scouting out some of their wrestlers. Being a senior, I have to lead a lot more and work a lot harder to show the younger kids. We have a lot of younger kids on the lineup and in the room, so showing them a strong work ethic really helps,” Nicholas Garcia (12) said.
