The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee was a fun and interesting experience. The actors and actresses really played their roles well, especially Alexander Kohut (11), who played William Barfee, a contestant in the spelling bee who possesses a magic foot which helps him spell words. The cast outfits were very fitting to the characters personalities and added to the uniqueness of the musical. Many of the songs included in the musical, like “Magic Foot” and “My Unfortunate Distraction”, had great energy and left the crowd laughing.
The musical also included a few people from the crowd on stage to be apart of the production alongside the cast, dismissing them when they spelled a particularly difficult word wrong. The plot eludes the different motives the characters have behind wanting to win Putnam County’s 25th Annual Spelling Bee.
The musical ends with William Barfee winning this years bee, despite being sabotaged by Logainne Schwartzandgrubeniere’s father. Miss Peretti and Vice Principal Panch are judges for the Bee accompanied by Mitchelle Mahoney, an ex-convict performing community service as the Official Comfort Counselor to the children who lose the Bee, although she was not very good at her job. The musical was an amusing and lively performance that I thoroughly enjoyed seeing.
