A Great Comeback
September 16, 2021
Since starting her music career when she was 17, Halsey has released four studio albums and 24 singles. Now at 26, she has won multiple awards, and also had a child. Ender Ridley was born on July 14, 2021. Despite having a baby, the young singer jumped right back into the music scene, with her new album If I Can’t Have Love, I Want Power.
This was exciting for her fans, the last album Halsey had came out with before this was in 2017, in her album Hopeless Fountain Kingdom the deluxe version. This album had 16 songs on it, her albums tend to be larger like this to tell more stories within the songs.
This album, released on Aug. 27, 2021, and has 16 songs on it. There is no deluxe version yet. All of the songs ranging from about two to four minutes in time. Taking a turn from her older albums which were mostly about lovers or teenage empowerment. This album focuses on women’s empowerment, many of the album’s songs being about how women are goddesses, how they should feel empowered to do what they want and need to do. The song “A Girl is a Gun” highlights how women can be unpredictable if hurt by their significant other.
The song “Lilith”, based on a demonic woman in Judaic mythology, captures the idea of what would happen when one falls for a ‘demon’ like woman, one who messes everything up, however, this song is from the woman’s point of view. She knows they mess everything up and is warning her partner about this. The album walks a fine line in its message of woman empowerment and walking the line between self-preservation and destruction.
In the teaser for this album, they further prove the woman’s empowerment theme by having their breast out and a baby on her lap, however, it is good to note that the baby is not her own. This promo got a lot of attention and the scene even made it into one of the music videos for the song.
Overall the song ranges to about 48 minutes in time, which is normal for her demographic.
