On Saturday Nov. 11, the girls basketball team played against Penn High School. The games started with the freshman team playing in the fieldhouse and the JV in the main gym at 5. Both games were close in score, as expected with the rival team from Penn.
“To prepare for the game I ate a good meal and listened to music. I reviewed our plays and warmed up hard. Playing the game this year was very different from last year because we had lots of seniors. We always really want to beat Penn, but this year we were especially determined because we knew it was the last time we’d play Penn with our seniors,” Leonard (11) said.
As one of the most important matches of the girls varsity basketball season, they had a lot at stake, but pushed through beating Penn. The freshmen team won with a score of 34-24. The JV ended up losing with a score of 40-47. Afterwards, the varsity team began to warm up. Their game began at 7, and the first quarter ended with a score of 20-10. With this being a low-scoring game and one of their starters not playing due to injury, the team reflected on what needed to be done to bring the score up.
“In the second half we started to run the ball more and we did not let them get set up in their defenses,” Leonard said.
They returned in the second quarter and pulled ahead. The team won 50-33 and looked forward to their next game against Bishop Noll on the 17th of Nov.
“It felt great to beat Penn because they are one of our biggest rivals. It is always a big game for us,” Leonard said.
