The gymnastics team starts off their first season meet of the season on Dec. 28th with a score of 102.5 points. The meet involved three other teams: New Prairie, Knox and Westville. The Indians won the meet overall.
“An average practice usually is two hours long and sometimes with weights afterwards. We either work on routines or different parts of the routine. Our coach decides each practice whether we need more skills or more routines,” Gabrielle Robbins (10) said.
The gymnasts spent time toward the end of break to prepare for the meet and had lots of practices leading up to the event. The team consists of two seniors and five sophomores meaning there are more underclassmen in the group.
“Some things I could work on are definitely not getting in my head when I compete. Gymnastics is really mental and I struggle with staying confident at meets. I would say the most challenging part of gymnastics is going for new skills. It’s really difficult to trust your body to be able to do really crazy skills,” Robbins said.
As it is her second year on the team, Robbins knows what to focus on which will help her and her team get better. Robbins is one of the gymnasts on the school’s team that is estimated to be a high scorer for the meet.
“I think the meet went great for both me and my team. Even though I fell on beam, I was able to connect and land everything else in the routine. I did really well on floor and I think this season is going to be strong for my team. We looked prepared and strong. Even though this meet was our first one of the season, we did a very good job,” Robbins said.
