On Thursday Feb. 1st, Munster High School hosted the Lake Central varsity girls swim team along with several other teams that competed at the sectional preliminaries. Since most of the girls placed well in the preliminaries, they qualified more competitive events, such as the sectional finals that were held at Munster High School on Feb. 3rd.
“I think that the meet went very well and all the long hours paid off because many of us made sectionals. We train very hard to perform as well as we do. I feel if we just continue to keep doing what we have been working on during practice then we will be able to do even better,” Tara Schassburger (11) said.
Throughout the past few months the girls have been working tirelessly to train for nights similar to these, when their times determine if they will swim again or not this year. Many of the girls have very fond memories of swimming and the team that they want to continue to grow and not be cut short because they didn’t make the top eight of their event.
“One of my favorite memories of being on the team is sectionals. The day before the meet is super special to us. All the parents and the coaches make the day such a nice experience and they give us little gifts,” Schassburger said.
Overall, Lake Central had one or more of their swimmers place in the top eight in 11 of the 12 events. In events two, four, six, seven and ten two Lake Central swimmers placed in the top eight and in events one, three, eight, nine, eleven and twelve one Lake Central swimmer placed in the top eight.
“Lake Central did amazing in the preliminaries. Lots of my teammates placed in the top eight or very close to the top eight, so I think that we did very well as a whole. I am super proud of us,” Joelle Reich (11) said.
