On Friday, March 21, Lake Central held their annual St. Baldrick’s assembly, where students and teachers gathered to raise money and awareness for childhood cancer. This year, 30 students and staff signed up to shave their heads in support of cancer research.
“I decided to shave my head for St. Baldrick’s because I had a cousin who went through the process of cancer. I wanted to actually help all the kids going through it and show them that I supported them,” Braeden Hurley (11) said.
If students didn’t want to shave their heads, they could support the cause in other ways, like donating to the foundation. In total, Lake Central raised $17,401.88 for St. Baldrick’s.
“To fundraise, I started off by talking to my friends about it, asking them if they wanted to donate. Eventually I started texting my family members about it. Then, my mom put the word out on her facebook page,” Hurley said.
In addition to shaving their heads and donating, students participated in the assembly in other ways. Choir members sang, the band played, PtE classes pied teachers, and two students were selected to announce.
“I got nervous right before announcing, I had a hard time trying to turn on the microphone. When everyone started to walk in, I sort of realized that I had to talk in front of the whole school, but after you say a sentence it gets better. Overall, it felt really good to announce for such an important cause. I was really honored that I got the opportunity to be part of such a great event,” Benjamin Fisher (11) said.
