Jacki Hoffman (9) set up a serve for Rachel Furmanek (9) to send over to Valparaiso. Valparaiso returned the ball back to us and we missed it, so Valparaiso received the point.

The freshman volleyball team crushed Valparaiso on Sept. 19 at home. The girls beat them in three sets: 25-19, 25-18 and 15-13.

It was just seconds into the game when both teams had already scored. Morgan Calligan (9) scored the 10th point of the game, and Valparaiso followed by hitting the ball into the net, making the score 11-9.

“We were being very smart and played very strong. We had a lot of energy and were just having fun,” Rachel Furmanek (9) said.

Towards the end of the first set, Furmanek hit an out on Valparaiso, making the score 20-16. The final score of the first set was 25-19. The second set went just as the first one did–with rapid scoring on both sides.

“[The girls need to] work on making smarter decisions to be a better volleyball player. We let the ball fly right to a person on the other side,” Lindsay Thompson, Head Coach of the Freshmen team, said.

The final score of the second set was 25-18, with a spike from Kelly Orze (9) and Valparaiso failing to retrieve the ball in time.

“Overall I think this is the best game they have played. They played their hearts out. They wanted to beat Valpo,” Thompson said.
