October is known as Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Across the United States, athletes show their support by wearing pink at sporting events. This year at Lake Central, a new way of showing support and fundraising was brought to the surface on Tuesday, Oct. 1.

The idea for the organization “Bump Out Cancer” originated from the college teams participating in “Dig Pink,” which is also a fundraiser for breast cancer awareness month; however, the founder of Bump Out Cancer, Joe Kruzan, thought the fundraiser should be expanded.

“There’s so many different kinds of cancer, we didn’t want to focus on just breast cancer. Even though we have breast cancer in our lives, we wanted to focus on all cancers,” Kruzan said.

In the gym, different cancer organizations were lined up and selling things like bracelets, T-shirts, hair headbands, etc., and all of the proceeds went to different types of cancer research.

“This was the first event held for Bump Out Cancer and we chose the game to be against Portage because there is a girl on the varsity team whose brother has leukemia,” Kruzan said.

Before both teams began the game, cancer survivors walked down the middle of the court in front of the players and then continued to walk in front of the fans as they were recognized for winning their fight or continuing their fight against cancer.
