Each year, the show choirs, Trebleaires and Counterpoints, compete in the Indiana State School Music Association’s Solo and Ensemble competition. However, due to the hazardous weather conditions prior to the contest, many after-school rehearsals had been cancelled.

“I feel like we lost quite a lot of rehearsal time that couldn’t be made up due to snow days. It’s hard to reschedule rehearsals because most of us are involved in other activities like the musical, and rehearsals would overlap. It’s all about practice when it comes to performing, and when we lose that practice time, it really hurts us,” Rachel Dobias (12) said.

To make up the practice time, students were given some class time to devote to preparing, but, for some, that was not enough for a gold ranking. The Trebleaires were half of a point short of a gold ranking.

“My heart dropped a little bit [when I heard we got silver]. I was really sad and disappointed because I knew we could have done better,” Emma Rose (12) said.

The students traveled to Munster High School on Saturday, Feb. 1, to compete in this competition. Those students who received a gold will be able to go on to the State level held at Perry Meridian High School on Feb. 22. This includes not only the Counterpoints, but also small ensembles and solo performances.

“It’s exciting to see how the [final] performance will end up” Justin Cortez (11) said.
