Last weekend, beginning Feb. 22, members from LC’s various choirs went to the ISSMA State Competition down in Indianapolis. For the first time in the choir’s history, everyone who entered and sang received a gold rating from the judges. This included both ensembles and solos.

“It was many months of hard work that I spent practicing at home, mostly on my own. I did have a pianist, and she helped me prepare. Thankfully all of the hard work paid off and I ended up getting a nine, which is a perfect at State,” Kristi Schultz (12) said.

Schultz, as well as 14 other individuals, is also involved with the Lake Central Counterpoints, also known as show choir. Counterpoints rehearse every Monday and Friday from 2:30 p.m. to 4 p.m., and spend months preparing their two competing songs.

“The weeks before ISSMA I would always want to practice my music after school because I wanted to get it right every time. I wanted to make sure that every event I was in would get a gold. I wanted a gold for me, myself, and my whole entire group,” Brett Balicki (11) said.

The choral director, Mrs. Sandra Hobbs, Music, always lets the entries who get gold ratings at State perform their pieces in the March concert. Due to all of the success, the upcoming concert on March 18 is going to be one of the longest she has ever held while working here.
