The music plays, the deafening roar of the crowd, and the thunder of feet climbing the bleachers echoes throughout the East Chicago High School gym. On Friday, March 8 and Saturday, March 9, the boys basketball team faced off against East Chicago and Munster, and left the gym Saturday night as Sectional champions.

“I was just excited we won and just happy we could win for the seniors. I have focused all on defense and just locking up my man. I really don’t listen to the crowd once the game starts; I don’t hear them at all,” Joe Bannister (11) said.

Last year the team lost in the last round of Sectionals to Munster.

“We knew that we had a chip on our shoulder from last year’s loss to [Munster] in the championship. We are going to prepare for [Regionals] the same way we prepare for everything, which is hard, so we will do fine,” Tye Wilburn (12) said.

The team will battle through the Regionals games on Saturday, March 15. They will face LaPorte at 10 a.m. and if they win, will play again at 7:30 p.m.

“Winning a Sectional Championship is a memory that will never be forgotten. After losing to Munster last year in the championship, we worked hard all summer and this year’s season to put us in position to win this game. We knew we had to come out with the most energy we have had all season, but our road to State is still not over, and we are looking forward to coming out on top in our Regionals,” Tyler Ross (12) said.
