The girls varsity tennis team won 4-1 against Highland this Friday, April 18. The ladies competed on Good Friday, and a good Friday it was when they conquered Highland for the first time in four years.

“[Winning] was awesome. Just being a senior, we had never beat them, and it was a great accomplishment knowing I’d probably never play them again,” Jory Swider (12) said.

Because the meet was so close to Easter, the team celebrated by arriving early, exchanging Easter baskets and participating in an Easter egg hunt.

“Candy really pumped us up–our team was fueling with energy. Everyone went out there super excited, and none of us had pressure because we weren’t expected to win,” Swider said.

Head Coach Bryan Szalonek was pleased with Friday’s turnout.

“[Friday’s game] was the first time we beat Highland in a while, so it was a thrilling win,” Szalonek said.

The next girls varsity tennis match will be against Andrean High School on Tuesday, April 22, at 4 p.m. on the Lake Central courts.
