On Thursday, March 2, the Chess Club met in Room C326 and played games of exhibition chess. Club Sponsor Dr. Dustin Verpooten, Science, has been hosting the club for five years now.
“[My favorite part is] getting a chance to engage the kids after school in a intellectual wrestling match,” Dr. Verpooten said.
Chess Club is always open to all students and members encourage other students to try it out.
“We typically meet on Thursdays immediately after school. We welcome players whether they’re veterans or new players. We teach them the ropes if need be,” Matthew Hughes (12) said.
The combination of chess puns by Dr. Verpooten and strategic battles on the board keep the members coming.
“I’ve enjoyed the game for years and I like teaching people. It’s always fun for a new challenge because new people means different strategies, new challenges, and more fun to be had,” Hughes said.
The next meeting will be on Thursday, March 16, in Room C326.
