Doubles Dominate

The Lady Indians Varsity Tennis team traveled to Hobart for the Hobart Tennis Tournament to round out the week. The Girls competed in three matches throughout the day against New Prairie, Portage and Hobart. The team ended up with a 2-1 record for the day.

“As a team, we have started out the year very strong.  We played five matches this week and won four of them. All of the girls have been hitting their shots and making smart decisions,” Coach Bryan Szalonek, Social Studies, said.
Both doubles teams, however, came away with individual titles. The number one doubles team of Brittany Warzyniak (12) and Anna Weber (12) and the number two doubles team of Nicole Stanek (11) and Vanessa Olson (11) each had a 3-0 individual record for the day making them doubles champions.

“I really just went into this tournament open-minded. We started off slow, but then we started to fight back. I was so determined to win the whole thing. Anna and I were in the zone, and we won that final game. We shook hands and said ‘Good luck’ on the rest of their season, and I met up with Anna by our bags and gave her a hug. My eyes began to tear up. Honestly, I felt on top of the world because we had won,” Warzyniak said.

The two tandems were recognized and awarded trophies after the conclusion of the tournament.

“This tournament was a big victory for us, and we’re both proud. This was our first tournament of the year, and winning it is hopefully a foreshadowing of the rest of our season.  We’re going to continue working hard and finish out our season strong,” Stanek said.
