Annual Relay

On Saturday, Dec. 7, the boys and girls swim teams competed at the 52nd Annual Munster Relays hosted at Munster High School. Teams from around the area, such as Crown Point, Penn, Munster, Portage, South Bend St. Joe’s and Valpo high school came out to compete against each other.

“At Munster Relays we have 3 Medley relays, but the 200 and 400 were our strongest. There are a few individuals on the team, including Maggie DePirro (12), Michaela Spears (12) and Jourie Wilson (10) who have really strong times in their top events which allows us to put together these insanely fast medley relays,” Paige Bakker (11) said.

The girls broke the meet record in the 200 and 400 medley. According to Bakker, the times they received on this meet were due to the commitment to last year and the beginning of this year.

“The meet was more of a fun meet to see where everybody’s times are, so we kind of threw people in certain events. Swimming is a very lonely sport, it’s just you and the water, but when you have someone cheering you on and your teammates are helping you out, it drives me personally to try harder. If we have that mindset we will go far in the season.” Leo Bowman (10)

The boys swim team competed in relays throughout the day as well. According to Bowman, the team took this competition as an opportunity to notice their strengths and weaknesses to help them thrive in the season.

“Teamwork is a major component of our races. Sometimes just hearing one of the girls yell a word of encouragement when I’m standing on the blocks can really boost my determination. We’re always there for each other, and, especially in the relays, we’re dependent on each other. We know that in order to win, everyone has to do their part,” Bakker said.
