The start of sectionals

The Varsity girls basketball team played in the sectional championship at Lake Central high school on Tuesday, Feb. 4. They competed against the Highland Trojans.

“The most challenging thing was definitely understanding what kind of offense and defense Highland was running, and what we needed to do to succeed,” Abby Oedzes (11) said.

For most of the game the Indians and Trojans were neck-and-neck. At halftime they were losing, but once the second half came around they picked it up and kept their momentum to finish up the game.

“My communication with the team through the game was definitely key in the win. We had to keep telling each other to not give up and we have this, instead of resulting in pointing fingers and blaming one another,” Tiana Morales (11) said.

The Indians were also occupied by a crowd of Lake Central students. The student section came out to support their Lady Indians at sectionals.

“I like playing with a big student section. It’s super cool when it comes to sectionals because during the season we never have kids show up. It definitely feels good to play with a lot of your friends cheering you on,” Jennifer Tomasic (11) said.

With a tough start to the game the girls encouraged each other and as a team won the game. The final score was 42-34.

“The game was very competitive, we went back and forth throughout all the quarters but fought our way to the win,” Oedzes said.
