Lakshmi Lewis (9) runs down the field with the ball, a Chesterton competitor close by. The LC girls worked hard to defeat the Trojans 2-1.

Though it was senior night for varsity, the JV girls soccer team still had a game of their own to win, which they did 2-1.

The girls had been tied for the majority of the game, but in the last 13 seconds, Gabriela Salazar (11) ran past the Chesterton goalie to score the winning goal.

“At about 10 minutes left of the game, I knew I had to get a goal. I was trying to be a leader for my team. I just kept saying I need to score this goal, and I have to stay focused,” Salazar said.

The girls didn’t have it easy this time around. Chesterton is one of their biggest rivals.

“Chesterton is a lot of competition for us, because they are very physical,” Salazar said.

Even with the exciting ending to a winning game, Coach Terri Budlove has aspects of the game she wants to see her team improve upon.

”They’re a very young team, so we’re learning. I’ve seen a big growth since day one, so where we need to improve at is just clicking more as a team and getting more experience, because they’re so young,” Budlove said.

JV’s next game is Sept. 18 in Valparaiso.
