Lake Central’s freshman girls basketball team traveled to Munster on Monday, December 13th for their ninth game of the season. The energetic game resulted in a loss of 30-20 for the LC girls bringing their record to 4 wins and 5 losses for the season.

When asked about the matchup, center Ayva Burns (9) replied, “I felt good about it! I was actually really excited to play them.”  Post player Madison Simpson (9) said, “I feel like the matchup was good and fair.”

The team worked together to keep up with the intensity of the game. Ultimately they were outplayed by Munster but are learning from their strengths and weaknesses.

“We ran our sets well, but our ball-handling needs work. Lots of turnovers and we shot 18% from the field. Sofia Contro took a charge on defense and overall did well. As a team, we shoot well in practice but panic and rush shots in games.” said  forward Kaylee Phillips (9)

Many of the girls have been playing basketball for years but are still getting comfortable playing together as a team. They have a few pre-game rituals they do together and some personal ones to get pumped up.

“We all stretch together but personally I listen to music that hypes me up.” said Grace Trinkle (9) Superstitious Kaylee Phillips (9) said, “As a superstition, I like to be the first one on a visiting court to make a shot in warmups, or if at home, be the last one to make a shot in warmups before the game.”

The season is a little over halfway through with a tournament and seven games still ahead of the team. The girls are working in practice to improve and stop their losing skid.

“We are working on rotating out on defense faster,” said guard Sofia Contro (9) Teammate Ayva  Burns (9) added, “We are practicing very hard to get better looks in the paint and on our passing so we don’t have a lot of turnovers.”
