On Saturday, Nov. 18, the girls wrestling team competed at the Clinton Prairie Invite which was located in the gymnasium. Elly Janovsky (12) earned first place and Riley Nunez (10) earned third place in their weight class. Reese Kasprzak (11) won first place in a separate weight class. Even though they won, the girls still had difficulties throughout the meet which they had to overcome.
“I think I could definitely improve on my shooting. I feel like I don’t take as many shots as I should in matches and they aren’t as clean as they should be,” Nunez said.
Throughout the match, the girls kept their spirits high as they rooted for the people on the mat. In an unexpected turn of events, Nunez and Janovsky had to face each other in the rankings.
“We were in the same weight class. I knew there was a good chance I would wrestle her. Looking at the bracket in the morning, we saw each other in the semis. It wasn’t a shock, but we weren’t happy about it,” Janovsky said.
While the team celebrated their victories, they took into consideration the mistakes they made during their matches. This way they can prepare for their future matches.
“I would say I need to be a little more aggressive. Sometimes I’m a little defensive and then I don’t get on my offense enough,” Kasprzak said.
