On December 5th, both the JV and Varsity teams played against Gary West Side High School. Lake Central won by a landslide and neither JV nor varsity has lost a game so far this season. Both teams fought hard to win every game and improve their rankings. According to Noah Enyeart (10), the JV win immensely helped the overall ranking of their team.
“After the game, we felt amazing. We were all hyped up in the locker room because we boosted up our ranking, so we are now sixth in the state,” Enyeart said.
Even though Lake Central won the games, the boys were still able to learn how to improve for future games. Each game helps the players figure out how to work together, what they do well at and what they need to work on. These improvements will make their team even better and will hopefully raise their rankings even higher. David Aguilera (10) explained some of the things the JV team could improve on.
“I feel we could’ve done better with our defense, stopping the ball and transitioning better. We need to not give up the offensive rebounds because that was killing us in the first half. I learned we need to hustle back and stop the ball on transition defense because at the end of the first half the other team had 18 points and I honestly think we could’ve kept their points lower than that,” Aguilera said.
Many of the boys on the JV and Varsity teams have been in the sport of basketball for a large part of their lives. For many of them, basketball came into their lives at a very young age. Aguilera shared when and why basketball entered his life.
“I got into basketball because my dad made the trophy case in Whiting when he was in high school. He just brought the game into my life,” Aguilera said.
