For their sixth game of the season, the girls varsity basketball team took on Hammond Central. The game took place on Nov. 23, ending with a Lake Central loss of 45-37. Though losing, the girls felt they did their best playing such a competitive team.
“So far this season we’ve had a tough schedule, meaning we are playing teams that are really good. With that being said, I think we are doing well. As the season goes on, we are playing teams where the competition isn’t as hard, so we should be okay,” Bryn Leonard (12) said.
Coming off a successful season the year before, the girls experience some pressure, knowing the standards they are held to.
“There is definitely pressure lying on us since we went so far last year, but the way that the seniors and I are handling it is fine. A lot of people are expecting us to get really far, but we try not to let the pressure get to us,” Vanessa Wimberly (12) said.
Not only was Lake Central runners up in girls basketball the previous season, they lost many of their starting players.
“Last year we had seven seniors, so I didn’t have as big of a role as I have this year. I think that I’ve been doing good at filling those spots. I get to start this year, which I think is better than coming off the bench. When you are on the bench you get cold and the game has already started, so it is harder. I’m happy with the changes this season,” Bryn Leonard (12) said.
