Despite a slow first half, the JV girls basketball team beat the Portage Indians 21-11.
“We had a hard time in the first half, but we worked hard in the second half. Definitely the defense and passing the ball well [helped win the game],” Melanie Gurney (10) said.
By halftime, the Lady Indians were still ahead of Portage, but Coach Kate Muesing, Science, had a few things for the team to work on the rest of the game.
“Our coach wanted to work on ‘us’. She said we’re a good team we just got to show it. She gave us individual jobs on what we needed to do to win this game as a team. Our saying for the game was ‘play your hearts out,’” Ashley O’Malley (10) said.
The pep talk worked, and the girls improved their score to 15-8 by the end of the third quarter.
“We played as a team and not as individuals. We moved the ball around well and we played unselfishly,” O’Malley said.
The JV girls basketball team ended their season on Thursday, Jan. 31.
