The varsity girls Softball defeated the Portage Indians 5-2.
Assistant Coach Leslie Iwema motivated the girls to keep fighting.
“We did not start off strong, but the kids were persistent. They capitalized [on] errors from Portage and put pressure on them defensively,” Iwema said.
In the past, Portage has managed to defeat the Indians, but yesterday the girls came out on top.
“Portage always has a way of beating us, but I think we just realized we needed to come back after losing in the last games against Chesterton and Crown Point,” Alyssa Childress (12) said.
This win tied the team for third place in the DAC.
“[Portage is] a solid team. It’s always a good game, and it was good for us to come up on the top since we gave up many games. We’ve given up runs in the last couple games so it’s good we finished this game strong,” Ashley Nylen (10) said.
The team is putting their game faces on to start a winning streak.
“I thought we played a good game and fought until the end. We are definitely improving and we are starting to come together,” Nylen said.
The pressure is on for the girls to keep their third place title; their next game is today May 1 against Michigan City at home.
