Boys tennis stormed the courts for the first match of the season on Monday, Aug. 20, against Wheeler.

“Before the match, I was trying to stay within myself. I didn’t want to focus on my opponent too much, because when you do that, you lose sight of the goal at hand. My goal was to start the season off on a good note. John Wooden, the greatest basketball coach of all time, once said, ‘Do your best when your best is required. Your best is required each day.’ I knew that my best was required today, and I shared the quote with the team before the match,” James Lafakis (11) said.

The varsity team won 4-1 overall and JV won all of its matches.

“I was a little nervous because it was the first match of the season. Doing warm-ups loosened up my nerves. I didn’t want to be too stressed before I started playing,” Brett Balicki (10) said.

“We’ve built a strong bond as a team, and we look to carry that bond with us through the fall. We are an eager and hungry group,” Lafakis said.

The next match will be Aug. 21 against Munster.
