On Nov. 23, a JV girls basketball game had the Lady Indians playing against the Lady Kingsmen of Penn High School. Final score was 36-30 Lake Central.

“[After the game] I was relieved but I knew it was time to focus on varsity winning,” Victoria Gard (10) said.

The Indians started off the game on a 6-0 run highlighted by four points scored by Emily Miklusak (10). Penn made a brief run closing the score to 6-4 because of two turnovers in a row by the Indians. The Indians ended the first quarter scoring six unanswered points with a 3-pointer by Ellery Anderson (10) at the buzzer.

“[To prepare for a game] as a team, we talk about what needs to be done. We focus on plays,” Miklusak said.

Penn came out strong in the second quarter, tying the game at 12-12. After a timeout, the Indians came out playing stellar defense the rest of the quarter, ending the first half on a 7-0 run. Crystal Guzman (9) highlighted the run with a steal and a last-second three pointer.

“I was really nervous. Last year we lost by 40, so I wanted us to redeem ourselves,” Miklusak (10) said.

The third quarter belonged to the Indians. Four different Indians scored in the quarter, extending their lead to 31-20.

“I think we will have some good turnout and we will finish out strong,” Gard (10) said.

The fourth quarter remained at a standstill until 3:19 left in the game. The Indians extended their lead to 33-20, when Penn went on a roll, closing the score to 33-28. Kylee Fehrman (9) and Gard hit key free throws at the end of the game.

The Indians’ next game is away on Dec. 3 against Munster.
