On Wednesday, Dec. 18, the varsity girls basketball team was triumphant in their game against the East Chicago Central Cardinals, winning 71-37.

“As a team, I thought we played well. We picked it up in the second half, moved the ball around really well and worked both ends of our offense,” Gina Rubino (11) said.

The Lady Indians led by double digits the entire game, leaving the Cardinals in such a deficit that they were unable to catch up.

“I thought I had a good overall game. I wish I could have taken back a couple turnovers I had, though,” Rubino said.

The girls are still adjusting to this season after losing some valuable players that graduated last year.

“We’re definitely a smaller team because we lost two post players. Our coach, [Mr. Marc Urban, P.E.] , knows our strengths and weaknesses and puts us in good positions to score and win the game,” Rubino said.

Rubino ended up scoring 23 points by the time the final buzzer sounded.

The Lady Indians will now prepare for their conference game on Friday, Dec. 20 at home against the Crown Point Bulldogs.

“It’s a conference game, so they’re going to come out wanting to win. [We have to] stick to the little things that we do and play how we know we can play,” Rubino said.

Although the girls feel that the game against Crown Point will be a challenge, they still expect a “W.”

“We should win; we’re expected to. They’re gonna come out wanting to win, but I don’t think we have to worry about them,” Rubino said.
