The varsity swimming and diving teams meet against Crown Point was originally scheduled for Tuesday, Jan. 21, but was rescheduled for Wednesday, Jan. 22, due to Tuesday’s extreme weather. Though both teams lost with a score of 106-80 for the girls and 119-67 for the boys, they did not go down without a fight.

“This week was a crazy week with the weather, delays, cancelled practices. Crown Point is a fast team. We had some good races, but we have a lot of work to do before we race them again at Sectionals,” Abigail Homans, assistant girls coach, said.

Despite their tough competition, the boys were able to win some races. Joshua Barajas (11) placed first in the 200 individual medley with a time of 2:00.49 and first in the 500 freestyle with a time of 5:01.24. Connor Homans (11) placed first in the 50 freestyle with a time of 22.33.

“We didn’t really expect to win to win a lot [of races] because we were really tired because we had two meets in two days, but we dug deep and put down some great times,” Jamiere Wilson (11) said.

Holly Spears (12) placed second in the 200 individual medley with a time of 2:19.37. Tracilyn Muszalski (12) placed second in the 100 freestyle with a time of 56.77. The A relay consisting of Brianna Shoemaker (12), Hailey Garlich (11), Muszalski and Spears placed second in the 200 freestyle relay with a time of 1:42.82. Hailey Garlich placed second in the 100 backstroke with a time of 1:01.97.

“We’re really excited and ready for sectionals. Also, everyone really came together and we’re really trying to enjoy every last bit of everything we have together,” Brianna Shoemaker (12) said.

The girls varsity team’s next meet will be Thursday, Feb. 6 at 5:30 p.m. at Munster High School for sectional prelims, followed by sectional finals on Saturday at 1 p.m. The boys varsity team’s next meet will be Tuesday, Jan. 28 at 5:30 p.m. at Portage High School.
