No final goodbye to Weekend Update Seth
March 4, 2014
On Monday, Feb. 24, “Saturday Night Live” cast member Seth Meyers graduated from the Weekend Update segment to his very own talk show, “Late Night with Seth Meyers,” and it seems like nothing changed.
We know Meyers from his long career at “SNL,” from cast member to head writer to, my personal favorite, host of Weekend Update. When NBC announced that Meyers would soon be taking Jimmy Fallon’s seat on Late Night, it was a bittersweet moment. I was incredibly proud to see him come this far, but I didn’t want to say goodbye to the Weekend Update I had always known.
Thankfully, I didn’t have to, because many aspects of “Late Night” reminded me of Meyers’s previous role on “SNL.” The show features many “SNL” alums: Fred Armisen, who is part of the 8G Band, and Amy Poehler, who appeared as a guest on the very first episode. They not only made the audience feel comfortable but also put Seth at ease. The various bits and recurring characters that appear on “Late Night” also pay tribute to the characters that appeared on Weekend Update; at times I completely forgot I was watching his new show.
I can’t wait to see how Seth continues to incorporate his past into his future at “Late Night.”
