Onto the next year: scheduling 101

Students are now able to schedule for their 2018-2019 classes. Guidance released a flyer of scheduling information for incoming freshmen families.

With scheduling starting or right around the corner, incoming freshmen, sophomores, juniors and seniors must consider what classes to take for the 2018-2019 school year.

With new classes, changes to existing classes and lots of opportunity, picking only seven classes that will both challenge and benefit students can be difficult. For many students, the whole scheduling process can be confusing.

Scheduling for upcoming seniors begins on Jan. 12, juniors on Feb. 9, sophomores on Feb. 13 and freshmen on Jan. 29. Thinking ahead is key. Instead of choosing classes that one’s friends are taking, it is important for a student to consider the graduation requirement for his or her desired diploma, classes related to one’s intended major, and classes that will push him or her.  The online course selection guide (http://lake-central.lcsc.us/wp-content/uploads/sites/3/2018/01/Course_Selection_Guide_18_19.pdf) is a great tool to help students understand their course options.

Scheduling for all grade levels closes on Feb. 28, but be sure to think through the options carefully because scheduling is not a first-come-first-serve process. Instead, the number of students who signed up for a certain class will determine how many sections, or class periods, of the class are needed. The goal of scheduling is to accommodate the master class schedule to the desires of the students. Sometimes, if a certain class does not fit into one’s schedule, an alternate may be added to the schedule, so be sure to choose an alternate wisely as well.
