One great game

Mina Cardenas (9) anticipates the ball coming over the net. The freshman volleyball team won during their first match against Portage.

On Thursday Aug. 30 at 5 p.m., the freshman volleyball team defeated Portage at home by winning all three matches. The Portage volleyball team had some great competitors, but Lake Central was still able to fight their way to a successful game. The ladies of the team played great and hope to continue their path to victory.

“I think they’re working really well together. They’re hitting their goals and their milestones and I think they’re just gonna keep trucking along and hitting them,” Coach Savanna Jurkovic said.

As freshmen, playing at a high school level is very different, but the ladies were able to pull off a win because of the work they have put in. The girls have trained hard, even over the summer, to get to where they are today.

“[Freshman volleyball] is a lot of fun, it’s a little more stressful than middle school, but it’s still a lot of fun,” Maddie Vandermeer (9) said.

Due to their strong work ethic and incredible team bond, the freshman volleyball team was able to pull off this great win, but that doesn’t mean they don’t have room for improvement.

“I feel that even though we won, we still could have played a little bit harder,” Toni Cimino (9) said.

The team is currently 6-1, hopefully they can continue to work hard and add to their victories this season. Their next game is on Tuesday Sept. 4, at Michigan City High School at 5 p.m.
