During the holiday season there are many traditions Lake Central participates in including the Angel Tree fundraiser through Student Council. Nearly a third of the Student Council went to Target on December 9th to buy items that will be given to Salvation Army for children and pre-teens. All semester people in Student Council raise money through chocolate box sales and restaurant fundraisers for this event. Oftentimes, this outing is the one of the highlights of certain people’s year.
“I chose to come on this trip today because I always love gift giving and picking out toys for people on the holidays. I thought I would be excited to pick out toys for these kids,” Riley Hanson (10) said.
While students were shopping, they had to look for items that would suit a variety of ages. The Student Council was purchasing gifts for kids as young as one year old to pre-teens as old as 13 meaning options were endless.
“We’re getting not only toys, but stuff for sports such as basketball. We’re also getting stuff such as loofahs and art supplies,” Lily Gorelick (9) said.
Then, on December 11th the officers of the club went on a trip to drop off all of the toys and gifts at the Salvation Army. The group also helped put many different kinds of stocking stuffers in the bags for the children to open Christmas morning.
“As part of our student council, we donate all of the toys and clothes to the Salvation Army, who then spread joy by delivering them to kids on Christmas Day,” Precious Fasanya (10) said.
