Student Council had their first meeting of the year on Sept. 5th, discussing to the future Student Council members their purpose and activities throughout the year. Their nearest fundraiser is the Angel Tree project, which raises money for the Salvation Army.
“Currently right now the angel tree fundraiser is about to start, right now we’re just selling chocolates and raising money for it. I used to go to a school in Chicago and we used to do it there so that’s why I was interested,” Alexander Diaz (12) said.
Many members of the student council have been doing it since middle school and through their high school careers start to have leadership positions. They have elections happen early in the year where students can run for President, Vice President, Secretary and many other positions.
“In the media manager, I’m in charge of running their instagram and sending out reminders. I’ll go on picstart or canva and look at something that pops and is eye-catching to get someone’s attention and then I’ll make sure I post reminders as often as I can to make sure people are staying up to date with things,” Tia Abughofah (11) said.
The students get involved in their school and in the community. Student council does two main fundraisers, the Angel Tree where they raised money for the local salvation army and the color run where they raise money for forest preservations.
“I think it gets students indeed and others in the school also engaged like when we sell the chocolates and get everyone to donate money. I also think we help the community by helping out our local salvation army and things like that,” Abughofah said.
Student council encourages students to reach out and help those in need. Unlike other community service based clubs at the school, the student council raises money directly for fundraisers making it a great way for students to help.
“I just really wanted to help out the community and volunteer. I think the student council is a great place to help raise money for fundraisers,” Diaz said.
