Because of Lunar New Year taking place a few weeks before, Asian American Club held a meeting on Feb. 19 to celebrate the holiday. In the days before, the members signed up to bring various traditional foods for everyone to try.
“Our Lunar New Year meeting was mostly a potluck. There was a lot of good food at the meeting like dumplings and desserts. Asian American Club, in general, usually has different foods, activities and sometimes we have temporary tattoos,” Hozen Jiang (9) said.
Though this meeting was held through Asian American Club, members were able to bring friends. Together, they all participated in activities for the holiday.
“For our Lunar New Year meeting, I invited a few of my friends to come with me. I really like the fact that we had a meeting for a holiday that we don’t necessarily celebrate in America. Everyone, no matter if they were an official member of the club, were able to indulge in Asian culture, which I enjoyed,” Abigail Decamotan (9) said.
Holidays like Lunar New Year are just some of the many reasons that Asian American Club meets. This club is meant to show representation throughout the school and to serve as a place where students feel comfortable.
“Asian American Club is important to have represented at our school because it shows Asian culture. It lets us be represented, while still making the activities interesting and not boring,” Adrian Catolin (9) said.
