The Varsity Girls Cross Country team defended their title at the Gavit Invitational held at Dowling Park on Saturday.

Even with two new coaches, Ms. Karen Arehart, physical education, and Ms. Ann Downey, mathematics, the team took first place at their first meet. Despite the heat, the team also had five girls in the top 10.

“I feel great about this team and season. All of the girls do everything that I ask, and it works well,” Downey said.

The girls spent their entire summer conditioning for this season and bonding with their new team and coaches.

“I feel like this is going to be a great season. I want to be in the top five this year, and I want to go to state as a team, maybe individually, “ Sarah Hudi (12) said.

The girls have their next meet on Tuesday, Aug. 28, against Merrillville.
