Theater Takes ‘Harvey Girls’ to State Conference

On Friday, Jan. 25, members of the Lake Central Theater Company headed south to Vincennes University to take their fall show, “The Harvey Girls”, to the Indiana State Thespian Conference. The show placed fifth out of the 12 competing schools.

“My favorite moment was acting on the [Vincennes University] stage because it was my first time acting in a competition. Everyone in the show did their best and acted their butts off,” Raquel Rembert (9) said.

Although the main focus was on the competition between the schools’ shows, many other events were offered to participants, including musical theater performances, student films, monologues and various technical events.

“[Being a part of the Tech Challenge competition] was a lot of fun. Since I was the only senior, I felt like I was mentoring [the other members of the team]. This year, we designed a shirt and special outfits. Overall, the Tech Challenge really made my weekend,” Anna Swan (12) said.

The three-day-long conference also included workshops, a dance and time to mingle with other Indiana thespians.

“[My favorite part of the conference] was seeing the other shows. Being a techie, I looked at [the other schools’] technical aspects more than anything – especially their costumes, considering that I designed the costumes for ‘The Harvey Girls.’ From seeing the shows at State, I learned some new things we can try and things we could improve on,” Paige Kruk (11) said.

While the weekend was a good opportunity to create new friendships and memories, it was also time for senior thespians to look back on their time in the company.

“It’s honestly bittersweet knowing that it’s my last conference, and I’ll keep these memories with me wherever I go. But I’m hopeful that the people who are returning next year will make it to State again,” Morgan Saulesbury (12) said.
